Japan Confirms Support for Flyovers in Dar es Salaam (Source: Daily News)
TIME has come for the country's commercial capital, Dar es Salaam to erect flyovers to ease the cumbersome traffic jams seriously affecting economic activities nationwide.Commitment towards the implementation of various development projects like infrastructure, agriculture, energy,... health, technology and environment was communicated to the public on Friday at the end of a joint meeting attended by a high-powered delegation from Japan and their counterparts in the country.
Speaking on behalf of 22 high-ranking government officials including Permanent Secretaries from different ministries, the Executive Secretary, Planning Commission, President's Office Prof Philip Mpango said the session follows the high-level discussions between President Jakaya Kikwete and the Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe during the fifth Tokyo International Conference on Africa Development (TICAD) in May this year."The government of Japan through the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has issued a grant for the construction of a flyover at the intersection of Nyerere Road and Nelson Mandela Expressway as well as Gerezani area along Kilwa Road. Completion of the city road project will ease congestion to reactivate economic activities," Prof Mpango explained.However, he made it clear that Tanzania has a role to play to ensure smooth implementation of the agreed projects which includes preparation of a conducive work environment. Clarifying on other areas of cooperation identified for immediate attention, Prof Mpango said Japan would share technology on rice production to increase yield per unit area for family consumption and enough for reserve.The Ambassador of Japan to Tanzania, Masaki Okada who led a 14-man Japanese delegation reaffirmed his country's commitment to continue working closely with Tanzania in different areas of cooperation.
Previously, the minister for Finance and Economic Affairs, Dr William Mgimwa was quoted in Dodoma last month as saying that Tanzania was set to receive 77.7bn/- from Japan as a grant and concessional loan to support poverty alleviation efforts and facilitate construction of a flyovers in Dar es Salaam.The funds, to be disbursed through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), include 52.5bn/- (Japanese Yen 3.127 billion) for the construction of the 'Tazara flyover' to ease traffic congestion in Dar es Salaam.Japan will also provide a total of 25.2bn/- (Japanese Yen 1.5 billion) as a concessional loan to support poverty alleviation strategies through the General Budget Support. Dr Mgimwa said terms and conditions for the loan were highly concessional whereby the interest rate is 0.01 per cent per annum and a repayment period of 30 years after the grace period of ten years."I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the government of the United Republic of Tanzania to express our sincere appreciation for the continued support provided by the government of Japan for our socio-economic development," Mgimwa said.Meanwhile, the Minister for Works, Dr John Magufuli, issued an ultimatum to Dar es Salaam residents to demolish structures on road reserves and those already compensated to pave way for implementation of the road projects.
